Semi- and bi-: understand common meanings

Sign in to save

A semicircle is half of a circle. A bilingual notice uses two languages. The prefixes look short, but the whole word tells you how the idea works in a sentence.

Choose semi- for words about a half or partial state and interpret bi- words by their full meaning, especially when a time word can be ambiguous.

semi-private / bilingual / biweekly /ˌsem.iˈpraɪ.vət/ /ˌbaɪˈlɪŋ.ɡwəl/ /ˌbaɪˈwiːk.li/

The short answer

Use semi- when a word means half, partly, or not fully. Bi- often means two, but read the complete word and make timing clear with a phrase such as every two weeks when needed.

The garden has a semicircular path around the fountain.

Why it works: Semicircular means shaped like half of a circle.

4 more examples
  • The patients share a semi-private room with a curtain between the beds.

The room offers some privacy, but the patients still share the space.

Not this:The patient has a private room with one bed. What changes: A private room is for one patient. A semi-private room is only partly private because another patient shares it.

  • The museum provides a bilingual guide in English and Spanish.

    The guide uses two languages.

Not this:The museum provides an English-only guide. What changes: English-only names one language. Bilingual describes material in two languages.

  • The two countries began bilateral talks about the river boundary.

The talks involve two sides, in this case two countries.

Not this:Several countries joined multilateral talks about the river boundary. What changes: Bilateral involves two sides. Multilateral involves more than two sides.

  • The team meets every two weeks to review the project.

This phrase gives the interval directly and avoids the possible ambiguity of biweekly.

Not this:The team meets twice a week to review the project. What changes: Twice a week means two meetings in one week. Every two weeks means one meeting after a two-week interval.

Start with the word after the prefix. Semi-private means partly private, while bilingual means involving two languages. Do not rely on the prefix alone when a word describes a schedule. If biweekly could confuse your reader, state the interval or frequency directly.

5 short steps

Use semi- for half or partly

Semi- often tells you that something is half of a whole or only partly has a quality. A semicircle is half a circle. A semi-private space has some privacy, but not complete privacy. Look at the rest of the word to see what is half or partial.

The workshop has a semi-circular seating area.

The seats form half of a circle, so semi-circular describes the shape. A circular arrangement would make a full circle.

Does semi-private mean completely private?

No. It means partly private, often because another person shares some of the space.

Use bi- for ideas involving two

Bi- often relates to two people, things, sides, languages, or years. Bilingual describes two languages. Bilateral describes two sides or parties. The prefix gives a useful clue, but the rest of the word tells you exactly what the two things are.

A bilingual employee can work in two languages.

The two languages are part of the meaning of bilingual. The word does not mean that the employee has two jobs.

The neighbors made a bilateral agreement about the shared fence.

Two parties make the agreement, so bilateral fits.

Read time words carefully

Some words with bi- cause confusion because different people use them differently. Biweekly may mean twice a week or once every two weeks. The surrounding sentence may settle the meaning, but a direct time phrase is safer when a meeting, payment, or deadline depends on it.

The report is due every two weeks.

Every two weeks states one report after a two-week interval. It does not mean two reports each week.

Which phrase is clearer for two meetings in one week?

Write twice a week. It gives the reader the frequency without relying on biweekly.

Let the whole word guide you

A prefix is a clue, not a complete definition. Compare semicircle, semiannual, bilingual, and bicentennial. Semiannual refers to twice a year, while bicentennial refers to a 200-year anniversary. Use a dictionary when an unfamiliar word affects an important detail.

The town planned a bicentennial exhibition for its 200th anniversary.

Bicentennial refers to 200 years. The word has bi-, but its meaning comes from the complete word, including centennial.

Does semiannual mean half a year long or twice a year?

Semiannual normally means twice a year. Read the full word instead of applying half to every situation.

Write schedules so readers can act

In casual conversation, biweekly may be clear because everyone knows the routine. In a written schedule, readers may not share that understanding. State the timing in plain words when an action depends on it. This small choice can prevent missed meetings or late work.

The class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The days make the frequency clear. A reader does not need to decide what biweekly means.

How can you make a biweekly deadline clear?

Write the exact frequency or interval, such as twice a week or every two weeks.

Before you go

Remember this

Semi- usually means half or partly. Bi- usually refers to two, but the full word determines the meaning. With a schedule, choose clear wording such as twice a week or every two weeks when biweekly could be read in two ways.
