Start with short recordings, then work through longer phrases. Listen once for the situation and again for the words.
Use o'clock for an exact hour. Use past for minutes after an hour and to for minutes before the next hour. Quarter means 15 minutes, and half past means 30 minutes after the named hour. You can also say the hour and minutes directly, such as eight twenty.
Use the for a known or specific noun. The listener can identify it from earlier information, the shared situation, or a description that names which one.
Use then for time and order, but use than to compare two things. For example, you cook first and then eat.
Use there is with a singular or uncountable noun. Use there are with a plural noun. Put the place after the noun when you want to say where the person or thing is.
There refers to a place or introduces something. Their shows that something belongs to people. They're means they are.
Use there for a place or in there is. Use their before something that belongs to them, and use they're when they are fits.
First choose singular or plural. Then choose near or farther away: this is near and singular, these is near and plural, that is farther and singular, and those is farther and plural.
Use threw for the past of throw. Use through for a path inside a place, time, or something finished.
To can mark a place or an action; two means 2. Too means also or more than you need or want.
Use too for more than needed and enough for the amount you need. Put too before an adjective or a noun phrase, but put enough after an adjective.
Use used to plus a base verb for a past habit or state that is no longer true. Say I used to walk to school or We used to have a dog. For negatives and questions, use did or didn't plus use to.
Find the subject and any time word before you choose a verb. Use the base form with I, you, we, and they in the present simple; add -s or -es with he, she, and it; and use the past form for a finished past time.
