Articles with geographical names
You can travel to Spain, sail on the Mediterranean, and hike in the Pyrenees. All three are place names, but they do not use the same article pattern. The useful first step is to notice what kind of name you are using.
Choose the or no article with common geographical names by recognizing a simple name, a group name, or a named geographical feature.

Do not choose the because a place is familiar or because the listener knows which place you mean. A country name such as Spain is already specific, yet it normally appears without an article. Instead, identify the name's usual pattern: simple name, group or descriptive name, or geographical feature.
Start with the type of geographical name
Before you add an article, identify the kind of place. Is the name a city, a country, a river, a range, or a group of islands? English follows patterns for these groups of names, even though each established name needs its own final check.
Rome is on the River Tiber.
Rome is a city name without an article. The River Tiber names a river, so the comes before the feature name.
Which name is a feature: Madrid or the Danube?
The Danube is a river, so it is a geographical feature name.
Use no article with most simple place names
Most names for countries, cities, continents, lakes, and individual mountains stand on their own. Say Spain, Rome, Africa, Lake Garda, and Mount Etna. Do not add the simply because the place is particular or well known.
She studied architecture in Barcelona.
Barcelona is a city name. The city is specific, but its usual name still has no article.
Choose the usual form: We spent a week in ___ Portugal.
Use no article: We spent a week in Portugal.
Use the with named features
English normally uses the with rivers, seas, oceans, mountain ranges, deserts, canals, and many groups of islands. You can often see the feature type in the full name, as in the Adriatic Sea or the Panama Canal.
Cargo ships pass through the Panama Canal.
The Panama Canal is a named canal. Panama, the country name, normally appears without an article.
Recognize groups and descriptive country names
Some countries have a usual name that refers to a group or contains a descriptive common noun. These forms often take the. Learn the United Kingdom, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates as complete names.
They moved from the United Kingdom to Ireland.
United Kingdom has an established article pattern. Ireland is a simple country name and does not take the.
Complete the phrase: a flight to ___ United States.
Use the: a flight to the United States.
Keep the article after a preposition
A preposition does not remove an article from a name. The name stays together after to, in, from, across, or along. Compare travel to Spain with travel to the United Arab Emirates.
Our boat crossed the Mediterranean at night.
The preposition does not change Mediterranean's usual article pattern. Sea names normally take the.
Treat exceptions as complete phrases
A pattern is useful, but it cannot predict every established geographical name. When you meet an unfamiliar name, check a dictionary, atlas, or trusted style guide. Write the name down with its article, if it has one.
We stayed in the Netherlands before visiting Belgium.
The Netherlands includes the in its established form. Belgium normally does not.
