6 short steps

Start with the job in the sentence

These words do not belong in the same grammar slot. Manage, mention, and measure are verbs. Method and mistake are nouns. First decide whether the sentence needs an action or a thing. Then use the situation to choose the precise word.

We need a better method for checking the final report.

Does the sentence need an action, or does it name a way of working?

It names a way of working, so method is the right noun.

Use manage when you deal with a task or situation

Use manage when someone organizes or deals with something that needs attention. People manage time, projects, teams, budgets, and difficult situations. The word suggests responsibility or successful control.

Which word fits a person who organizes a busy project?

Use manage because the person is handling the project.

Use mention for a brief reference

Mention means bring a person, fact, or subject into a conversation or piece of writing briefly. It does not mean explain everything. You can mention an idea in a meeting, mention a date in an email, or mention a concern to a colleague.

Nora mentioned the deadline before the discussion ended.

Nora referred to the deadline. The sentence does not say that she planned or changed the deadline.

Which word asks someone to include one detail in an email?

Use mention when the detail only needs a brief reference.

Use measure for size, amount, or degree

Measure means find out how large, long, heavy, hot, or numerous something is. The result may use a number and a unit, but the word can also describe checking a degree or amount. Use it when the sentence is about finding information through a measurement.

The nurse measured the patient's temperature before speaking to the doctor.

The nurse found a temperature. Mentioning the temperature would only mean talking about it.

Which word fits when you find the length of a table?

Use measure because you are finding the table's size.

Use method for a planned way of doing something

A method is a way of doing a task. It often follows an adjective such as simple, useful, or reliable. Use method when the focus is the process itself, not the person who carries it out.

Her method for learning spellings is to write each word in a short sentence.

The method is the study process. Her progress is the result of using that process.

Does a sentence about a repeatable way to solve a problem need method or mistake?

Use method because the sentence names an intentional process.

Use make a mistake for an error

A mistake is something that is wrong because a person misunderstood, forgot, chose badly, or acted carelessly. The usual verb is make: make a mistake. When you know what went wrong, name it after in or with.

The assistant made a mistake in the meeting notes and corrected it later.

The notes contain an error. A method could help prevent the error, but method does not name the error itself.

Which phrase describes writing the wrong date by accident?

Use make a mistake because the wrong date is an error.
