Put an adjective before a noun or after a linking verb such as be or look. Do not add plural -s to make it agree with a plural noun.
Adjectives: position and basic use
Put a basic adjective before the noun it describes: a quiet room. Put it after be, seem, or look when it describes the subject: The room is quiet; The room seems quiet. Use an adverb when you need to describe an action, as in Speak quietly.
Adverbs exercise 2: show how, when, and how often
Use an adverb to add a detail to a verb. Put frequency adverbs before most main verbs, put them after be, and place many manner or time adverbs after the verb or object.
Adverbs of frequency: always, usually, and never
Put an adverb of frequency before the main verb, but after be. Put it after the first helping verb when a sentence has one. Use never without another negative word.
Adverbs of frequency: talk about regular habits
Use always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, or never to say how often a habit happens. Put the adverb before most main verbs and after be.
Adverbs of manner: how actions happen
Use an adverb of manner to describe how someone does an action. Many adjectives become adverbs by adding -ly, but some common words have special forms.
Adverbs: add information about actions and descriptions
An adverb (a word that adds information) can change an action or description. It can also affect a whole sentence, and its form and position depend on the meaning.
Animal and bird sounds in English
English uses different verbs for different animal sounds. A dog barks, a cat meows, a cow moos, and many small birds chirp.
Antonyms exercise: find opposite meanings in context
Find the key idea in the sentence, then choose a word that gives its opposite meaning in that same situation. Antonyms often belong to the same word class, but the useful opposite depends on context.
Apostrophes: possession and contractions
Use an apostrophe to show that something belongs to someone or something, and in contractions such as don't and it's. Do not use an apostrophe just because a noun is plural.
