Sound alone cannot solve this spelling choice. Both words are often pronounced /ˈsɪə.ri.əl/ in British English, although accent and speed can change the sound a little. Use the meaning of the whole sentence. A packet in a kitchen suggests cereal. A code on a device, a numbered document, or an episode released in parts suggests serial.
