Synonyms exercise: choose the closest meaning in context

A friend may say that a film was funny, while a review calls it amusing. Both words point to laughter, but a word that fits one sentence may sound too formal, too strong, or simply wrong in another.

Choose a synonym that keeps the intended meaning, grammar, and tone of a short English sentence.

choose the closest meaning /tʃuːz ðə ˈkləʊ.sɪst ˈmiː.nɪŋ/

The short answer

Choose a synonym by reading the whole sentence. Pick the word that keeps the same idea and fits the grammar and tone; do not choose a word only because it appears in a word list beside the target.

The manager asked us to begin the meeting at nine.

Why it works: Start is a close synonym for begin here because both are verbs and both fit a planned activity. Commence has a similar meaning but sounds more formal.

Treat each question as a small meaning check. Read the sentence without looking at the options. Say what the speaker means in simple words. Then compare each option with that meaning. A good choice should leave the sentence natural when you read it aloud.

5 short steps

Read the whole sentence first

Do not match isolated words. First ask what is happening and what the writer wants to say. A word may have several meanings, and the sentence tells you which one matters. Look especially at the people, action, and result.

The library is quiet in the morning, so I can concentrate there.

Silent is close to quiet here. Busy is not, because it gives the opposite idea about noise and activity.

Choose the closest meaning of quick in The nurse gave a quick answer: fast, careful, or late?

Fast is the closest meaning. The answer happened in a short time.

Keep the same word class

The grammar around a word limits your choices. In They decided to leave, decided is a verb, so choose another verb such as chose only if you also adjust the grammar. In a very noisy street, noisy is an adjective, so a close answer should also describe the street.

We need to buy more paper before the workshop.

Purchase is another verb that can replace buy. Purchase as a noun, as in a recent purchase, needs a different sentence pattern.

In She gave a brief reply, should your synonym for brief be short or briefly?

Choose short. Brief describes reply, so the answer needs an adjective. Briefly is an adverb.

Check the words that go together

Words have usual partners. English speakers say make a decision, pay attention, and take a break. A synonym may be close in a dictionary but still sound unusual beside a particular noun or verb. Read the replacement with the words before and after it.

The coach asked the players to pay attention to the safety rules.

Notice is close to pay attention in meaning, but the sentence must change: The players should notice the safety rules.

Which phrase sounds natural: make a decision or do a decision?

Make a decision is natural. It is a common word partnership in English.

Notice strength and tone

Close words can carry different force. Tired means you need rest; exhausted means extremely tired. Some words also fit a more formal setting. Begin and commence are close, but commence often sounds more official. Choose the word that sounds right for the situation.

After the long walk, Amir felt exhausted and sat down.

Tired would be possible, but exhausted gives a stronger picture of Amir's condition.

Which word is more formal in a notice: begin or commence?

Commence is more formal. Begin is usually the easier choice in everyday conversation.

Use a replacement check

For each exercise item, replace the target word with your answer and read the sentence again. Ask four questions: Does the main idea stay the same? Does the grammar work? Do the nearby words sound natural? Does the tone still fit? If one answer is no, try another option.

The café was crowded at noon. The café was busy at noon. Both can describe many people and much activity in this context.

Now compare The café was enormous at noon. Enormous changes the meaning to size, so it is not a synonym for crowded.

Replace helpful in The receptionist was helpful with useful, kind, or noisy. Which option best describes a person's support?

Kind is the closest choice in this sentence. Useful can describe advice or information, but kind naturally describes a helpful person's manner.

Before you go

Remember this

Read the complete sentence before choosing a synonym. Keep the core meaning, word class, and natural word partners. Then check the tone. The closest word is the one that lets the sentence say the same useful thing.

Questions about "Synonyms exercise: choose the closest meaning in context"

What is a synonym in English?

A synonym is a word with a similar meaning to another word. Similar does not always mean identical: two synonyms can differ in strength, formality, or the words they usually appear with.

Nora was pleased when her application was accepted.

How do I choose the closest synonym in an exercise?

Read the complete sentence first, then test each option in that sentence. Choose the word that keeps the main meaning and also fits the grammar, nearby words, and tone.

Nora was relieved when her application was accepted.

Why can two synonyms sound different in the same sentence?

Close words can carry different shades of meaning. For example, one word may be stronger, more formal, or used with different word partners. The context decides which choice sounds natural.

The guide gave clear directions to the station.

Can I use a thesaurus to find a synonym?

A thesaurus is useful for finding possible words, but read examples before you use one. It cannot show every grammar pattern, common word partnership, or difference in tone for your sentence.

The guide gave a detailed description of the station.

Do synonyms always have the same word class?

For a simple replacement exercise, choose a word with the same job in the sentence. A verb usually replaces a verb and an adjective usually replaces an adjective, unless you rewrite the surrounding grammar.

We need to repair the broken chair before lunch.
